Rather than redirecting users to external help articles or requiring them to interpret unfamiliar terminology, Coinbase would surface simple explanations exactly when users need them.

Why this, why now
The Business
Coinbase's long-term strategy is to bring more mainstream users on-chain. As the platform expands beyond crypto enthusiasts, more first-time buyers will enter the ecosystem with little or no prior knowledge of crypto.
The Users
While experienced users understand concepts like spreads, wallets, and transaction finality, new users often don't. Successfully onboarding this audience requires more than making crypto accessible. It requires building enough confidence for users to complete their first purchase.
The Opportunity
Coinbase reports a significant gap between registered users and monthly transacting users. While public data can't determine where users disengage, it highlights the importance of improving activation and reducing friction for new users. This case study explores one hypothesis supported by qualitative research: user confidence breaks during the first purchase because explanations are delivered outside the user's workflow rather than within it.

Discovery
Without access to Coinbase's internal analytics, I approached this as a discovery exercise rather than a validation exercise. I combined four research methods:
App Store and Google Play reviews
Reddit and Trustpilot discussions from the past two years
Coinbase Help Center documentation
Mobile purchase-flow walkthroughs
Competitor analysis of Robinhood, Kraken, and Cash App
The goal of this research was to identify recurring patterns. The recurring patterns pointed toward one stage of the journey where user confidence appeared most at risk: completing a first crypto purchase. I used this as the focus for the remainder of the analysis.
Understanding the Journey
Rather than mapping every friction point equally, I evaluated each stage based on my original research question.

These observations suggested the issue wasn't missing information, it was how that information was delivered. To understand whether this was unique to Coinbase or common across the industry, I compared competing purchase experiences.
Competitor Analysis
I compared Coinbase's purchase flow against Robinhood, Cash App, and Kraken.

Insight 1
Existing education relies on external resources.
Across nearly every platform, additional learning is delivered through Help Centers or educational content outside the purchase flow.

Implication
Education exists, but users must leave the task they're trying to complete. This creates unnecessary context switching during the first purchase experience.
Insight 2
Most platforms assume prior knowledge.
While some products provide tooltips or onboarding, none provide contextual explanations during the purchase itself.

Implication
First-time users are expected to understand unfamiliar terminology before making a purchase. This presents an opportunity for Coinbase to differentiate through contextual education.
Across both Coinbase and competing platforms, a consistent pattern emerged: educational content existed, but it rarely appeared within the purchase flow itself. This highlighted an opportunity to rethink not what users learn, but when they learn it.
Opportunity
Coinbase already provides the information users need to complete a purchase.
The opportunity isn't to explain more, but to meet users where they are by presenting the right information at the right moment.
Rather than expecting users to learn unfamiliar concepts before purchasing crypto, Coinbase can introduce contextual guidance that teaches only what users need, exactly when they need it.
This aligns with Coinbase's goal of making crypto more accessible while preserving the experience for existing users.
Proposed Solution
Contextual Learning Layer
Introduce a Contextual Learning Layer that appears only during a user's first crypto purchase.
Rather than presenting a traditional walkthrough, the product would explain unfamiliar concepts exactly when they become relevant.

Reviewing the Purchase
Instead of redirecting users to external documentation, the first purchase experience would introduce contextual explanations that explain unfamiliar concepts without interrupting the purchase flow.

Example B
Purchase Confirmation
Before confirming a purchase, users receive a short explanation of what happens after tapping Confirm, including transaction finality and when their crypto will appear in their portfolio.

Each explanation appears only during a user's first purchase and is triggered by their current action. They are optional and dismissible. After the first purchase, the experience returns to the standard Coinbase interface.
Why This Solution?
I prioritized this solution because it addresses a high-confidence user problem without requiring changes to Coinbase's underlying trading infrastructure or compliance processes. Rather than redesigning onboarding or changing pricing, the Contextual Learning Layer improves how existing information is delivered, making it easier for first-time users to understand while preserving the experience for returning customers. Because the capability is reusable, Coinbase could later extend contextual learning to staking, Base, wallets, and other high-complexity workflows.
Because this proposal introduces a new interaction rather than changing Coinbase's trading infrastructure, the fastest way to validate its value would be through a controlled experiment with first-time buyers.

If the experiment increases first-purchase completion without negatively affecting completion time or user satisfaction, Coinbase could expand the learning layer to additional crypto workflows such as staking, sending assets, or interacting with Base.
Risks & Tradeoffs
Introducing contextual education also introduces new complexity.
Showing too much information could slow purchases or overwhelm users rather than reassure them.
Educational content must therefore be concise, optional, and surfaced only when relevant.
Additionally, educational explanations involving pricing and transaction mechanics would require legal and compliance review to ensure they remain accurate across supported markets.
Next Steps
If I were part of Coinbase's product team, I would:
Analyze internal funnel data to validate where first-time buyers abandon the purchase journey.
Conduct moderated usability sessions with new crypto users to identify moments of uncertainty.
Prototype the Contextual Learning Layer and test comprehension with users before engineering investment.
Run an A/B experiment measuring first-purchase completion and user confidence.
Explore expanding the interaction model into a reusable onboarding capability across Coinbase products.
Reflection
This project reinforced an important lesson about product discovery: the first problem you identify is rarely the one you end up solving. I began this project believing pricing transparency was the primary issue. After reviewing Coinbase's current experience, I found that transparency already existed. The larger opportunity was helping first-time users understand information without interrupting their workflow. That shift transformed the solution from redesigning a screen to improving how and when knowledge is delivered, and reinforced the importance of letting evidence, not assumptions, shape product decisions.
